James Erdman III led the UAP lane of the Director’s Initiatives Group at ODNI. In May he told the Senate the CIA illegally monitored DIG investigators and their contacts with whistleblowers. This week, on Catherine Herridge Reports, he said something that landed like a cold shower on the disclosure community: his probe did not produce firsthand aliens or reverse-engineered hardware – and the public conversation is thick with “disinformation,” “lies,” and “grift.”
Those two Erdmans are the same résumé. The fight is over which one to believe.
What Erdman Told Herridge
Clips circulated by UAP James quote Erdman setting a high bar for belief and a low trust bar for the public narrative:
“Unless someone shows you firsthand evidence of an alien, unless someone shows you firsthand evidence of an item that is being reverse-engineered, or unless people come forward and say, ‘Here’s the evidence that this is the crash retrieval program’ – you should maintain a healthy degree of skepticism.”

He is not saying UAP reports are fake balloons. He is saying he did not see the crash-retrieval case closed inside DIG – and that anyone treating podcast claims as settled proof is being played.
Sharp: The Lukas Problem
Liberation Times editor Christopher Sharp connected the dots to Principal Deputy DNI Aaron Lukas – the former CIA station chief Liberation Times previously named as a central blocker of stronger material.
Sharp said Erdman, Lukas’s former CIA colleague, “has just associated UAP whistleblowers with grifting and disinformation” and “suggested Lukas could release the findings,” which Sharp framed as looking like “AARO Historical Report 2.0.” His question to Lukas:
Do you want whistleblowers to break their NDAs and come forward, so that you can undertake an investigation in good faith? Or are you simply looking for more people to call grifters, so that the CIA can continue to evade scrutiny? – Chris Sharp on X, July 27, 2026
That lands against the White House’s NDA-waiver path for AARO/PURSUE briefings – and against Lukas’s own July 22 post celebrating NDA relief so witnesses can come forward through cleared channels.
Sharp also reminded readers that Erdman sat inside an inquiry Liberation Times reported as rocked by claims of whistleblower intimidation and smears – the same DIG orbit that Matthew Brown described as a trap dressed as protection.
Nolan: “Count Me Suspicious”
Garry Nolan, Stanford pathologist and member of the White House UAP Science Advisory Council, posted that Erdman’s interview came up in council chat under Chatham House Rules Nolan says he proposed. He can report his own comments:
- Calling whistleblowers “grifters” is “disheartening” and “offensive to the scientific process”
- He knows of no accused “grifter” who made a penny coming forward – while some council peers earn large speaking fees
- Erdman “presents no data, only anecdote,” yet asks to be believed over witnesses with multiple corroborations
- “Count me suspicious of Erdman” – but he would meet in D.C. or have Erdman appear before the council
“I find it offensive to the scientific process that a member of the US government calls whistleblowers ‘grifters,’ and the word, frankly, should be stricken and condemned when used in relation to those who, in all honesty, are coming forward in service of their country.” – Garry Nolan on X, July 28, 2026
Nolan’s point is process, not cosmology: a science council cannot treat one ex-investigator’s anecdote as a veto on everyone else’s evidence stack.

None of that resolves whether crash retrievals exist. It does resolve the week’s political question: the man who led Gabbard’s UAP inquiry is now casting doubt on the whistleblower pipeline Trump’s NDA waivers were supposed to open – while naming Lukas as the release valve for DIG’s conclusions.
What to Watch
- Does Lukas publish a DIG/UAP findings product, and does it look like AARO’s historical report or like primary evidence?
- Does the Science Advisory Council put Erdman on the record with documents, or leave Nolan’s suspicion as a tweet?
- Do waived-NDA witnesses still walk into AARO/PURSUE after watching the DIG chief call the beat “grift”?
Erdman asked for skepticism until someone shows the craft. Nolan asked for the same standard applied to Erdman. Both are asking for evidence. Only one of them ran the government’s intake room.
